Labels: ,

If you want to select all the files in a folder or in the Desktop, use the CTRL + A keyboard shortcut in Windows Vista. If you’re a serious mouse user, and need the select all functionality in the right click context menu in Windows Vista, it's very useful and time saving.By a simple Windows registry tweak you can add Select All option in the right click context menu.

Note that this registry tweak does not work in Windows XP or in other previous Windows versions and works only in Windows Vista. The steps for this trick is given below:
  • Open Notepad editor from All Programs->Accessories in Windows Vista start menu.
  • Copy and paste the following code(in bold) into the new Notepad document:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\selectall] @="Select &All" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\selectall\command] @=hex(2):57,00,73,00,63,00,72,00,69,00,70,00,74,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,20,\ 00,22,00,25,00,77,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,69,00,72,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,65,00,\ 6c,00,65,00,63,00,74,00,61,00,6c,00,6c,00,2e,00,76,00,62,00,73,00,22,00,00,\ 00

  • Open the Notepad Editor again and paste the following code(in bold) into it:
set oShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
oShell.SendKeys "^a"

  • Save this newly created Notepad document with a very suitable name such as SelectAll.vbs any where in your computer hard drive. It is better to save the file in the system drive. Make sure that save the newly created Notepad file with the .vbs extension. The VBScript file SelectAll.vbs provides the Select All item in the right click context menu in Windows Vista. This VBscript file uses Windows Scripting Host (WSH) SendKeys method to send the keystroke CTRL + A for selecting all items in a folder
  • Move the file SelectAll.vbs to the C:\Windows directory.
  • Double-click SelectAll.reg to merge the registry entries to the Windows Vista registry.
  • Since the changes made at Windows registry, a reboot is required to effect the changes.
The Select All option is added to the right-click context menu in Windows Vista. This context menu option will be seen when you right-click on the Desktop and when right-clicking on an empty area in a folder.

To remove the Select All option from the right-click menu:

Here is the steps to remove the Select All item from the Windows Vista right click context menu:
